Back in the day, Manhattan Beach was part of a ten-mile stretch of ocean property known as Rancho Sausal Redondo. It was referred to as Shore Acres by George Peck, who owned a section of the north end of town in the 19th century. At the turn of the 20th century, New Yorker John Merrill bought the south portion and bestowed upon it the moniker of Manhattan. The two businessmen couldn't come up with a name for the city so they flipped a coin. Merrill (and Manhattan) won. Manhattan Beach was officially incorporated in 1912 when wooden planks were laid along the Strand and side streets for pedestrians and in the sand on Manhattan Avenue for vehicles.
